Description

Although this book centers on the healing of Gildiner’s patients, it is also about her own gifts and growth as a therapist. The book starts with an Author's Note about seeking the patients' consent (which is described in each patient's section and appears to be more the author informing them that she is writing about them in a "case study" - i. They seek Gildiner's help to overcome an immediate challenge in their lives, but discover that the source of their suffering has been long buried.

I enjoyed her explanations of certain therapies and theories (which reminded me of all I had studied in college) and how she learned that each patient is different and adapts multiple therapeutic strategies for each person. While I praise her on going to extra mile to educate herself her response to Dannys abuse felt disrespectful. Laura agreed, but the worst aspect for her was that although she’d done everything possible to rise above her family circumstances, she was now wallowing in filth, just as they always had. An exceptional clear-eyed report on the psychoanalytic process from a skilled and compassionate doctor drawing from a lifetime of work. The premise of Good Morning, Monster is Gildiner, a therapist, shares five of her most “heroic and memorable” patients. My guess is that they agreed based on the idea that there would be more focus on the hero, less on the trauma and victimization. As anyone who has sat through a Zoom therapy session knows, there's really no substitute for the real thing. Medication has made no difference and the medical doctor is certain that Peter’s physical problem must have a psychological cause. The behavior of Alana’s father has prevented Alana from developing in the ways that children and adolescents usually do within safe and healthy environments and Gildiner must help Alana to proceed through these stages of development retrospectively.

When you can’t acknowledge your true feelings because they’re too excruciating, you defend against them with anger. Staying with someone from the beginning of their story to the end really helped me focus on their psychological growth and understand how the therapy worked.

Man labai patiko, kad Catherine nevaidino Dievo ir drąsiai skaitytojui prisipažino nežinojusi kaip elgtis su vienokia ar kitokia paciento trauma. These stories show how the process of therapy can heal even the deepest wound and most traumatic of experiences.

I also keep remembering how insane her tangent was about the obgyn she met at Central Park who had just had a patient die. As interesting and informative as this material inherently is, it felt like there was a lack of depth or insight in the recounting of it that left me a bit nonplussed.

In therapy, Alana reveals that she has survived extreme abuse from her father in all forms throughout her life, including rape. I picked this up because I heard it was very compelling and because I wanted to see if it would help me gain insight into my own therapy; I recently started work with a new therapist and there is so much to unpack. Since reading Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Therapist, Her Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed last year, I've been so eager to find something similar.
