Review Summary: One of the entertainment industry's most influential titles gets married to a deceptively simple rank-and-file wargaming system. Containing forces for both House Stark and House Lannister, players build their armies, select leaders, construct their tactics deck, and engage in one of five different game modes. If don't have a strong thematic preference and you want to try before you invest further, this set is the best choice. A sideboard to the main battle with five slots that when claimed give a bonus such as healing a regiment or forcing an enemy unit to roll a panic test. Once you get the hang of your faction and start to understand its interactions, you will realize how brutally the game treats its combat units.

If on the other hand you have a very strong thematic preference, you can avoid the present set and go straight for the faction you crave. The art is great, the models are designed by DarkSword Miniatures inc and George RR Martin signed off on them. Units are comprised of four different types of miniatures each, not of mindless copies of the same design.Battles can range from large-scale wars with hundreds of miniatures to simple skirmishes between a few units without complicating the elegantly designed rules. This is much more than a wargame where everything happens on the board and you wait the roll of the dice to decide the outcome. This means that units can entirely change in their roles and stats which although done for the sake of balance could be annoying if a favourite unit suddenly gets revamped and you need to remake your list to accommodate it. The fact that it has six different starter sets (and more than 60 expansions to support them) is rather telling.

Meanwhile, any that oppose the Lion are dispatched with either Jaime’s swift blade or crushed underfoot by the Mountain. Greatjon's cards on the other hand allow units to hand out damage left and right, and even more so when they are wounded or perceived at a disadvantage. These range from generic captains to named characters who may only be taken once and can lead to some very vicious combinations. The armies have character, you can build your own force based on your favourite faction and there is a lot of support for it with an active tournament scene. Each of them has a special power, and interacts with the Tactics Board; it is not deployed on the battlefield. You get everything that you need to play that specific army including dice, terrain, cards and more.

Lannisters always pay their debts, and in the War of Five Kings, some debts can only be paid in blood.Units themselves have stat cards detailing their combat effectiveness, movement, armour and other special rules. I’d been tempted to get the Stark vs Lannister set but put off by the better quality and variation of the more recent sculpts from other factions. The game features several unique systems, including alternating activations that keep the players engaged; a Rank System that changes a unit's capabilities as the battle rages on; a Tactics System that provides strategic powers fueled by a finite resource each round; and, most importantly, the iconic Heroes, such as Robb Stark and Jaime Lannister, that can change the course of war both on and off the battlefield. However, with the death of Robert Baratheon and imprisonment of Ned Stark, the Direwolf has mobilized for war.

Models in this set have updated, alternative-pose sculpts compared to those in the 'Stark vs Lannister' set. There's a lot of cardplay, while the (admittedly simple) worker-placement element will make hardened wargamers think twice about how they approach the battle.Your first few games will be a blast as well, even though tactics- and strategy-wise you will be barely scratching the surface. The sculpts are crisp and well produced to the point where they are probably the nicest boardgame plastic models available and there is a grimness in the aesthetic that makes them ideal for using bare or painted depending on your preference. Jamie can project his ability of counterattacking to other units, better block attacks, and weaken his enemies, or even cause panic. King Robert Baratheon is dead, and those in control of the Great Houses of Westeros have decided it’s time that they had a representative on the Iron Throne. Non-combat units have only one available action, namely to move into an empty space of the Tactics Board and immediately trigger the relevant effect, along with the non-combat unit's special effect.
