Laura becomes a bit infatuated with the girl and her family and you can never blame her, considering her own family, who are lovely but poor and always working (she has no siblings). I was surprised when I so easily slipped back into the world of Jacqueline Wilson at the ripe old age of 29. But I don't think there's anything wrong with happy endings, especially in books for younger audiences. This book is aimed at older readers than Jacqueline Wilson’s usual target audience so do beat that in mind. I enjoyed the story, I thought it was well-paced and one thing I’m extremely happy about is the time we got to spend with Laura before she finds out she is pregnant, as we really get to know her.

Set in the 1960s, before sex education in schools was the norm, a time when unmarried mothers were pitied and shamed and teen pregnancies were hidden from society - girls often left with little support from family and authorities and had no choice but to give up their babies - the story follows Laura, a bright only child from a poor background with a scholarship to the local grammar school. Anche questo libro non fa eccezione: si tratta della storia di una gravidanza di una ragazzina di 14 anni, in seguito a violenza, che viene quindi portata in una struttura per ragazze madri.

Laura often stays for dinner at the Bertrams which is full of laughter, plenty of food fit for a restaurant, and a delicious pudding for afters. I thought Laura was a lot younger than she was (she is fourteen) because her thoughts about things and behaviours seem childish. This book is dark but real and I was captivated by all of the themes surrounding the main plot (don’t worry I won’t give away any spoilers!

Met her on Saturday and she is just how she seems in her interviews which is a pleasant surprise i dont think my inner child would ever have healed if she was a bitch. With rare exceptions such as bank holidays, the book group meets on the first Wednesday of every month at 7. They were my safety blanket and I look back on them with fondness and comfort , and was eager to read one now I’m in my early 30s with the view of picking up from where I left off but my goodness this book is not a comfort blanket.

At only 14, still very naive and incredibly homesick, Laura meets other girls her mother would label “Rough,” or “Tarts” or “Unsuitable,” who in fact are caring, and friendly. I truly felt I was there and was so heartily routing for Laura, I had no idea if this was going to be a tragedy or not but can safely say my heart soared and was full by the end of reading this book. I couldn't wait to dive back into her wonderful world and be enveloped in the warmth her books just ooze. Wilson mi ha sempre stupito per la delicatezza con cui scriveva di certi argomenti in libri che erano per ragazzine intorno ai dieci, dodici anni.

As well as winning many awards for her books, including the Children’s Book of the Year, Jacqueline is a former Children’s Laureate, and in 2008 she was appointed a Dame. The book ends up focusing on the bond between mothers and babies, and whilst I didn’t fully believe that Laura had the capacity for some of the realisations she had, I do think that could just be my scepticism. My heart ached at how one moment Laura is navigating life, family and friendship as an adoloescent and the next she's whisked off to a home. I knew it would be well written and sensitively tackled as Jacqueline Wilson so often does and I knew it would be handled well.Premessa: Jaqueline Wilson e´ l´autrice che mi ha accompagnato per tutta la mia infanzia, quindi il mio giudizio e´ influenzato da il mio personale attaccamento nostalgico. Once her parents find out, it’s her mum that’s the leading party in talking about the shame she has brought upon the family. Attending the school on a scholarship due to her excellent grades, Laura hides her address from Nina as long as she can.
