One disconcerting aspect of my drill is that, as you rack the head down, the locking position does not move with it until the head gets close, then, with a loud bang, it jumps down to a new position. They say it's great for drilling accurately and repeatedly, it' s very simple to install, and the speed control is really easy to use. IMHO the lack of strength compared to a lump of cast iron is far outweighed by the features of this nifty DP with variable speed, fabulous digital depth readout and quick setup.

For example, anyone unfamiliar with pillar drills won’t know the hassle associated with changing the speed of the drill, a process that involves removing a cover and manually adjusting one or more belts across the spindles linking the motor to the drill bit. The perfect speed adjustments, and it''s easy to dial in exactly what you need from 200 to 3,000 rpm.

The PTA 1000 workbench provides flexibility on the job, especially for projects with large workpieces. When you say "large" forstners, what diameter do you mean by that (a large forstner to me is 40mm+). I decided that the time saved in not having to change belts to adjust the speed was worth it alone as I am constantly switching between metal work and wood work and changing speed fast is essential for my job as a professional prop builder for the TV industry.

On the other hand, the Bosch's clear speed readout, ease of setting exact, repeatable speeds and the excellent laser cross hairs suit my purposes very well - they may not be what everyone needs. So far i have not bothered to make use of the electronic depth guage, still preferring to mark a depth stop on the bit with some coloured tape. I had initially constructed a wooden cutting fence table, secured to the Bosch by bolts through the baseplate grooves designed for its own fence. The drill works fine however the laser pointer is not accurate as the alignment to the drill point goes off by a few millimeters at the workpiece. This is great if you know you need to drill holes to an exact depth, which you can either eyeball by watching the display, or set the built- in stop-block for the desired depth. There is little side to side movement in the drill shaft, and the movement in chuck spindle is horrendous. Read drilling speeds and depths on its digital display or turn the knob underneath for stepless speed adjustments.

With innovative speed adjustment without complicated belt changing and a digital display to measure speed and depth you’ll be drilling accurate holes in no time. The first lasted about 2 months before it started playing up, started stopping and starting when running. FYI I've actually pulled the unit apart to look at the build quality, it's quite a nicely built unit and not that hard to dismantle should the need ever arise. Chuck play:The chuck does have a bit of play, meaning it can move very slightly sideways if I push it.

I like the simple but practical parallel bar which is easy to move and has a flat upright which means you can clamp to it in addition to using the hold down clamp. The laser cross-hairs are spot on and much more useful than you would think, and it works on 3mm mild steel. Some manufacturers will offer a direct repair or replacement service (as applicable) which will often resolve your problem more quickly. I think you have had more use of your drill than I have of mine so its good to get that feedback too.
