Sangfroid follows and is another song about relationships and their transient nature, this track has great lyrics that are really heartfelt and poignant. The quality of the writing and playing on this album make it an absolute standout album of 2022 for me. David had also finally, after many years, begun to gain both widespread acclaim and respect, furthermore he had found satisfaction in his life with partner Sarah Ewing. I don’t ever think that there can be an absolute truth in music, it’s the people that are involved in the process at that moment, making choices.

When David died, the challenging task of doing the final recording and mixing the record fell to David’s co-producer, Patrick Phillips.

Travis really goes for it again here, with squalls of soprano, tenor and baritone sax as the song drives to a momentous close. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.

Big, Big Train, while massively successful in the prog-sphere, mean little to anyone outside their own niche. One thing I must note, and it pains me to say this, is that David not only seems to change genre, he also changes his vocal style somewhat. His legacy thankfully remains with this album that was 90% complete at that time having now been completed by his friends as a tribute to a good man, a Brave Captain, to coin one of his songs. The Singer And The Song continues the autobiographical tone as this track is about how singing his songs enlivens and satisfies him. David will certainly be missed but his legacy lives on in his recorded works and this album will certainly be a part of that legacy that he leaves us.I subsequently had to take on a wider role with David’s passing, but Patrick Phillips and I were definitely on the same wavelength when it came to manifesting some of this at the mixing stage, with these goals in mind. Thankfully, Big Big Train have chosen to continue, albeit in a different configuration and one that pays tribute to their deeply missed colleague.

Overall, listening to Door One reminds of how I felt when I listened to by first BBT opus - The Underfall Yard. There are moments where he doesn’t sound completely himself, and others where he clearly stretches himself beyond his capabilities. The album is not actually very long in duration but it has flashes of brilliance and will need several plays to really understand, which is fitting really. However, by the Spring of last year, he was seeking to forge a solo career in parallel with continuing to be a leading force within Big Big Train.

But probably expected as the album was nearly completed [but were there other tracks that were still to be recorded? The atmospheres and use of ambience were a huge source of inspiration and a big factor in the making of Door One. Door One, David Longdon’s posthumous solo album, is out now on CD and white and black vinyl editions.Nicely crafted tracks but a couple do seem to be that they are missing the final touches to the album. David was a massively creative force of nature when it came to music, and I hope that he would have been happy with the choices that we made . It’s a good thing to know that this album was 95% complete at the time of David’s passing and so what we are hearing is pretty much his complete vision for this set of songs. Especially because – as Longdon looks back on doors opened, paths chosen, and where those choices have led – this personal, emotional and frequently sublime record simply vibrates with life, and living. Although it only runs for 30 seconds, it’s an excellent piece which shows another side to David’s compositional ability.
